Responsibilities of Position
The Mechanic position is integral to ensuring the City’s work gets done. They diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide spectrum of diesel-powered heavy-duty vehicles and equipment that are used by the Fire, Police, Public Works, and other City departments. Their work involves planned maintenance as well as diagnosis and repair of unexpected vehicle and equipment malfunctions of engines, electrical and hydraulic systems, brakes, rear ends, and more. While they may occasionally work on light duty vehicles, the majority of the work is focused on heavy duty vehicles and construction equipment such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, motor graders, asphalt trucks, and more (did we mention fire trucks?). Mechanics interact with internal customers and external vendors, keep paper and electronic work records, and maintain a clean work/garage area. Mechanics participate in City snow and ice and other emergency response operations and call-outs that may require working up to 16-hour shifts at all hours with little or no advance notice.

The starting salary is $30.46 per hour plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, June 4, 2023.
A high school diploma or equivalent. Completed coursework without a diploma will be considered.
Verifiable progressively responsible professional experience in diesel engine maintenance and repair work.
A combination of training and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
Ability to perform essential functions that require physical agility as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
Valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within an approved timeframe: class B Commercial Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement; Section 609 Technician certification from the Environmental Protection Agency and Forklift certification.
Possession of mechanic’s hand tools by first day of employment.
Completion of a two (2) year training program in automotive, light truck, or heavy-duty truck maintenance and repair from an accredited trade or vocational school. Satisfactory completion of a qualifying co-op or apprenticeship program.
Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) or other manufacturer specific certifications.
Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification in the Fire Apparatus Series.
Experience in a Fleet environment.
Experience with welding and metal repair and the use of cutting tools.
